What is the difference in pre-paid plans and regular plans?

I have t-mobile and my contract ended. My plan is $50 a month for 1000 minutes and unlimited text. I was checking prepaid plans and for $50 bux I can get unlimited talk and text plus 100MB data. So this sounds like a better deal, but is there a catch?
